February 9, 2021, will be remembered as a milestone for Steelworkers who belong to Local 8888 and a day of honor for a trailblazing Black woman from Hampton. The City of Hampton hosted an emotional groundbreaking ceremony for a new neighborhood center named for Mary W. Jackson, who grew up in Olde Hampton and went on to become the first Black female engineer at Langley/NASA space center.

Local 8888 is partnering with NNS Trades to offer free drive-thru flu shots over the next two weeks at our union hall. For your safety and convenience, this drive-thru event will be held in the parking lot behind our building at 4306 Huntington Ave. in Newport News, VA. The attached leaflet provides the schedule for Nov. 1-2 and Nov. 8-9. Participants must stay in their vehicles and wear a mask.

There are some important developments happening in Washington that are good news for Local 8888 members. Hazard pay for shipyard workers is in the Hero Act recently passed by the House of Representatives and sent to the U.S. Senate. The hazard pay measure is included in a $200 billion fund to support premium pay for essential frontline workers in the private sector who are sustaining their communities and the economy during this pandemic.
